A lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game played at modern casinos is called keno. A traditional live casino keno game uses a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball is imprinted with a number 1 through 80. A blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls during the balldraw. A "caller" presses a lever opening a tube, where the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system calculates all wagers based on the numbers drawn. One can choose any numbers on a a blank keno ticket form and mark them with an "X". After all players successfully place their wagers, the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random. "Paytables" are series of pay scale choices that are set by the casino. Depending on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the player is paid this or that sum of money. Keno paytables and the house edge set for each of those paytables vary greatly from casino to casino. There are no identical two casinos' keno paytables. The house edge can vary from less than 4% to 66%.

Keno, a bingo-like or a lottery-like gambling game, is played nowadays at practically every casino. This game originates from China where it was first introduced by Cheung Leung in 187 BC. Still the origins of the game are really a bit of a mystery. There can be found several different opinions. The generally accepted theory is that the game was invented during some war in China when the army needed money badly. The city residents didn't want to give their money to support the unworthy aim of the emperor. So the emperor tried to work out a strategy of generating the necessary finances. Cheung found an excellent solution to this problem: he created a very popular game - keno. Keno was so successful that it can be said to be the reason for Cheung's victory. The Great Wall was also built with the help of the money that gave keno! The game soon became known as the White Pigeon game, since carrier pigeons were used to inform surrounding towns and villages of the winning numbers. In the past rather than having a board of just numbers on the original keno boards, they used classic Chinese characters. If at first the game included 120 characters, this number dropped to 80 in the course of time. Thousads of Chinese immigrants, who came to America to work in the mines in the mid 1800's, brought keno there. The fact that gambling games were forbidden didn't prevent the Chinese from playing and spreading it all over the States. It continued to use Chinese characters and thus obviously didn't enter popular mainstream American culture until it was modified to include the numerical system.
