Keno is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game played at modern casinos. The parts of a keno game are a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" and 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball has a number (from 1 to 80) imprinted on it. During the balldraw, a blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". Each of 20 balls drawn are recorded by the caller and a "verifier" and all wagers based on the numbers drawn are calculated by the computerized keno system.
One can choose any numbers on a a blank keno ticket form and mark them with an "X". After that you can place your wagers and then the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random.
Each casino sets its own series of pay scale choices called "paytables". The player is paid based on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket and according to the paytable selected with regard to the wager amount. There is a wide range of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. One can hardly find two absolutely identical keno paytables.
Usually the house edge is from less than 4% to 66%.
Straight Bet
Straight ticket betting is betting the numbers marked as a single wager. The simplest way to play is to make a straight ticket bet, but a lot of players don't like it.
King Ticket
If you want to make a king ticket bet you should circle the number which will be used in all combinations marked.
Combination Bets
The player marks several number groupings and plays combinations of them. If you bet on 8 numbers, you can group those numbers to 4 sets, each set is on two adjoining numbers, for example. This gives you 5 chances to win - either for the straight bet or for the grouped bets. Imagine that you bet 2 sets of numbers. You are sure to win something if at least 2 numbers out of each set come out. If you had placed straight bets you would have won nothing. The idea of combination bets is easy to grasp. And if you get used to applying them you can win much more often.
Bet Against
This option appears if you marked at least 8 spots on the tickets. Bet Against means that you are sure none of the numbers you marked will appear during the balldraw. You are paid only if none of the numbers come up.
Catch All
This option can be played with 2 to 7 spots marked on the ticket. This bet means that you suppose all your numbers will be drawn. You win if all your numbers come up.
Top or Bottom
This is the only option that is enabled as soon as you start the game before you mark the ticket. You are betting that top or bottom part of the ticket will have fewer spots than the opposite part. The payoff depends on how great that difference is.
