Keno is played at modern casinos, it is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game. The parts of a keno game are a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" and 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball has a number (from 1 to 80) imprinted on it. During the balldraw, a blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" are used to record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system is used to calculate all wagers based on the numbers drawn.
An "X" is put over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form with 80 numbered selection boxes (1 to 80). After that you can place your wagers and then the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random.
Every casino has its "paytables" - series of pay scale choices. The player is paid based on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket and according to the paytable selected with regard to the wager amount. There is a wide range of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. Two identical keno paytables can hardly be found.
The house edge can vary from less than 4% to 66%.
The game begins with the following: a "keno runner" calls "keno" and offers to carry the wagers to the booth. The keno runner is handed the wager payment and the “inside ticket”. A keno wager form filled out by the customer is called the "inside ticket". Then he takes the wager and ticket to the keno counter for processing. In return the player receives an "outside ticket" - an official wager receipt. It is incumbent on the player to check the ticket for errors before the game balldraw is drawn. When all the 20 numbers are known, the winning tickets are paid. The payouts differ in defferent casinos. For example, a four-spot ticket with wagered might return the if two numbers hit, bring if three numbers hit, and pay 0 if all four come in. But in another casino, the three-number hit might pay and all four 5, and in another the payoffs might be and 0. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average. Paybacks range from below 70 percent to more than 80 percent.
