Every casino has its "paytables" - series of pay scale choices. Depending on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the player is paid this or that sum of money. Keno paytables and the house edge set for each of those paytables vary greatly from casino to casino. No two casinos' keno paytables are identical.
The house edge ranges from less than 4% to 66%.
"Keno runners" begin the game. They walk around, call "keno" and carry the wagers of the players to the keno booth. The players give the keno runner the "inside ticket" and the wager payment. A keno wager form filled out by the customer is called the "inside ticket". Then he takes the wager and ticket to the keno counter for processing. What he takes back is an "outside ticket". That is an official wager receipt. Before the game begins each player should ckeck up his ticket. No corrections are accepted after the first ball is drawn.
After the 20 numbers are drawn, winning tickets are paid according to a table that varies from house to house. If you have, for example, a four-spot ticket, you are paid 1:1 if 2 numbers hit, 1:5 if 3 numbers hit and 1:120! if all the 4 numbers hit. The payouts at other casinos will more often than not differ. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average. Paybacks range from below 70 percent to more than 80 percent.
