» Keno Jargon

A lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game played at modern casinos is called keno. The parts of a keno game are a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" and 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball is imprinted with a number 1 through 80. A blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls during the balldraw. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system calculates all wagers based on the numbers drawn.
One can choose any numbers on a a blank keno ticket form and mark them with an "X". 20 balls at random are drawn only after the players wagers are placed.
"Paytables" are series of pay scale choices that are set by the casino. The player is paid based on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket and according to the paytable selected with regard to the wager amount. Keno paytables and the house edge set for each of those paytables vary greatly from casino to casino. No two casinos' keno paytables are identical.
The house edge ranges from less than 4% to 66%.

The game begins with the following: a "keno runner" calls "keno" and offers to carry the wagers to the booth. The keno runner is handed the wager payment and the “inside ticket”. A keno wager form filled out by the customer is called the "inside ticket". After that he takes the wager and that ticket and carries them to the counter. What he takes back is an "outside ticket". That is an official wager receipt. It is incumbent on the player to check the ticket for errors before the game balldraw is drawn. You won't have such an opportunity after the balldraw begins.
When all the 20 numbers are known, the winning tickets are paid. The payouts differ in defferent casinos. If you have, for example, a four-spot ticket, you are paid 1:1 if 2 numbers hit, 1:5 if 3 numbers hit and 1:120! if all the 4 numbers hit. Though in another casino the corresponding payouts will be different. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average. Paybacks range from below 70 percent to more than 80 percent.
