» Principles Of Keno
Keno is played at modern casinos, it is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game. A circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result is used in the game of keno. Each ball has a number (from 1 to 80) imprinted on it. A blower is used to push air into the bubble and mix the balls during the balldraw. A "caller" is used to press a lever opening a tube, where the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" are used to record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system is used to calculate all wagers based on the numbers drawn. An "X" is put over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form with 80 numbered selection boxes (1 to 80). After all players successfully place their wagers, the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random. "Paytables" are series of pay scale choices that are set by the casino. Depending on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the player is paid this or that sum of money. Keno paytables and the house edge set for each of those paytables vary greatly from casino to casino. One can hardly find two absolutely identical keno paytables. The house edge ranges from less than 4% to 66%.

Keno, a game similar to the big state or provincial lotteries, is easy to play and one of the most popular games in any casino. This game originates from China where it was first introduced by Cheung Leung in 187 BC. Still the origins of the game are really a bit of a mystery. Several different versions exist. The generally accepted theory is that the game was invented during some war in China when the army needed money badly. The citizens refused to contribute additional funds to the fruitless cause of the war. Cheung had nothing else to do but to develop some new way of taking money out of the people. At last he managed to create a very easy and effective means of getting money. That was the game of keno. Keno was so successful that it can be said to be the reason for Cheung's victory. The Great Wall was also built with the help of the money that gave keno! Keno was later given a different name - the White Pigeon game. That was not for nothing: carrier pigeons informed the surrounding towns and villages of the winning numbers. The keno board didn't always look the same way. The Chinese classic characters were used instead of numbers. The total of 120 characters was used in the game but the number reduced to 80 in the long run. Thousads of Chinese immigrants, who came to America to work in the mines in the mid 1800's, brought keno there. Although initially outlawed, Keno continued to be played in secrecy by these new immigrants. It became popular among the Americans only when the Chinese characters were changed into numbers.
