Thousads of Chinese immigrants, who came to America to work in the mines in the mid 1800's, brought keno there. Though the game was considered illegal, the new Chinese immigrants still played it. But keno remained purely Chinese entertainment till the characters on the keno boards were replaced by the numbers.
