Keno is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game played at modern casinos. A traditional live casino keno game uses a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Numbers from 1 to 80 are imprinted on each ball. A blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls during the balldraw. A "caller" is used to press a lever opening a tube, where the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". Each of 20 balls drawn are recorded by the caller and a "verifier" and all wagers based on the numbers drawn are calculated by the computerized keno system.
An "X" is put over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form with 80 numbered selection boxes (1 to 80). 20 balls at random are drawn only after the players wagers are placed.
Every casino has its "paytables" - series of pay scale choices. The player is paid based on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket and according to the paytable selected with regard to the wager amount. There is a wide range of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. One can hardly find two absolutely identical keno paytables.
Usually the house edge is from less than 4% to 66%.
The game begins with the following: a "keno runner" calls "keno" and offers to carry the wagers to the booth. The keno runner collects the wagers and the "inside tickets" of the players. A keno wager form filled out by the customer is called the "inside ticket". Then he takes the wager and ticket to the keno counter for processing. The keno runner returns with an "outside" ticket, which is the official wager receipt. It is incumbent on the player to check the ticket for errors before the game balldraw is drawn. No corrections are accepted after the first ball is drawn.
After the 20 numbers are drawn, winning tickets are paid according to a table that varies from house to house. For example, a four-spot ticket with wagered might return the if two numbers hit, bring if three numbers hit, and pay 0 if all four come in. The payouts at other casinos will more often than not differ. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average. Paybacks range from below 70 percent to more than 80 percent.
