In the past rather than having a board of just numbers on the original keno boards, they used classic Chinese characters. The total of 120 characters was used in the game but the number reduced to 80 in the long run.
In the middle of the 19th keno was brought to the US. At the beginning keno was out of law. But it wasn't a real obstacle for the immigrants. It continued to use Chinese characters and thus obviously didn't enter popular mainstream American culture until it was modified to include the numerical system.
Chance is the main thing in keno. There is almost no strategy which can help the player to win. The drawn numbers don't depend on those drawn previously because all of them are chosen randomly. All numbers have the same opportunity of being drawn.
Play the numbers that haven't come up in recent games. Theoretically the long-term results for each number will be made even out by the coming up of these numbers. To prevents the game from being a certainty it was created with a "random" nature.
But numbers, which have come up, are more often betted on than the numbers that haven't come up. Some unusual and out-of-order trends and patterns can be very profutable when capitalized upon.
