Keno is played at modern casinos, it is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game. There is a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result in keno. There are numbers from 1 to 80 on each keno ball. The balls are mixed by a blower when it pushes air into the bubble. A "caller" presses a lever opening a tube, where the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". Each of 20 balls drawn are recorded by the caller and a "verifier" and all wagers based on the numbers drawn are calculated by the computerized keno system.
An "X" is put over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form with 80 numbered selection boxes (1 to 80). After all players successfully place their wagers, the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random.
Every casino has its "paytables" - series of pay scale choices. The more numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the more the player is paid. Keno paytables and the house edge set for each of those paytables vary greatly from casino to casino. No two casinos' keno paytables are identical.
The house edge ranges from less than 4% to 66%.
"Keno runners" begin the game. They walk around, call "keno" and carry the wagers of the players to the keno booth. The keno runner collects the wagers and the "inside tickets" of the players. A keno wager form filled out by the customer is called the "inside ticket". Then the wager and the ticket are taken to the keno counter. The keno runner returns with an "outside" ticket, which is the official wager receipt. It is incumbent on the player to check the ticket for errors before the game balldraw is drawn. You won't have such an opportunity after the balldraw begins.
After the 20 numbers are drawn, winning tickets are paid according to a table that varies from house to house. If you have, for example, a four-spot ticket, you are paid 1:1 if 2 numbers hit, 1:5 if 3 numbers hit and 1:120! if all the 4 numbers hit. Though in another casino the corresponding payouts will be different. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average. Paybacks range from below 70 percent to more than 80 percent.
