» Keno Main Principles

Keno is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game played at modern casinos. A traditional live casino keno game uses a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball is imprinted with a number 1 through 80. During the balldraw, a blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system calculates all wagers based on the numbers drawn.
One can choose any numbers on a a blank keno ticket form and mark them with an "X". After that you can place your wagers and then the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random.
The series of pay scale choices called "paytables" are set by each casino. The more numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the more the player is paid. Players will find a wide variation of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. One can hardly find two absolutely identical keno paytables.
The house edge ranges from less than 4% to 66%.

One of the most popular games at any casino is Keno. It is a game similar to the big state or provincial lotteries. Keno appeared in China in 187 BC. Still the origins of the game are really a bit of a mystery. Several different versions exist.
The most commonly taken opinion is that Cheung Leung invented this game when his army ran out of money during some war. The city residents didn't want to give their money to support the unworthy aim of the emperor. So the emperor tried to work out a strategy of generating the necessary finances. Cheung found an excellent solution to this problem: he created a very popular game - keno. Keno helped Cheung win that war. The Great Wall was also built with the help of the money that gave keno! Later keno was known as the White Pigeon game as people of surrounding villages were informed of the winning numbers by carrier pigeons.
In the past rather than having a board of just numbers on the original keno boards, they used classic Chinese characters. If at first the game included 120 characters, this number dropped to 80 in the course of time.
Thousads of Chinese immigrants, who came to America to work in the mines in the mid 1800's, brought keno there. The fact that gambling games were forbidden didn't prevent the Chinese from playing and spreading it all over the States. But keno remained purely Chinese entertainment till the characters on the keno boards were replaced by the numbers.
