Keno is played at modern casinos, it is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game. The parts of a keno game are a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" and 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball has a number (from 1 to 80) imprinted on it. A blower pushes air into the bubble and mixes the balls during the balldraw. A "caller" is used to press a lever opening a tube, where the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system calculates all wagers based on the numbers drawn.
Players mark an "X" over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form containing numbers from 1 to 80. After all players successfully place their wagers, the casino draws 20 balls (numbers) at random.
The series of pay scale choices called "paytables" are set by each casino. The players payout depends on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket. There is a wide range of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. No two casinos' keno paytables are identical.
Usually the house edge is from less than 4% to 66%.

Keno was so successful that it can be said to be the reason for Cheung's victory. It is also credited for providing resources and helping to fund the massive undertaking of building the Great Wall! Later keno was known as the White Pigeon game as people of surrounding villages were informed of the winning numbers by carrier pigeons.
The keno boards of the past consisted of the Chinese characters but not of the numbers. Originally, as many as 120 characters were used in the game, and only after it left China would the number drop to a more familiar 80.
Keno appeared in the US in the 19th century as a lot of Chinese people came there to work on the railroads. The fact that gambling games were forbidden didn't prevent the Chinese from playing and spreading it all over the States. It continued to use Chinese characters and thus obviously didn't enter popular mainstream American culture until it was modified to include the numerical system.
