Keno is played at modern casinos, it is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game. A traditional live casino keno game uses a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball is imprinted with a number 1 through 80. The balls are mixed by a blower when it pushes air into the bubble. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". Each of 20 balls drawn are recorded by the caller and a "verifier" and all wagers based on the numbers drawn are calculated by the computerized keno system.
An "X" is put over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form with 80 numbered selection boxes (1 to 80). 20 balls at random are drawn only after the players wagers are placed.
Each casino sets its own series of pay scale choices called "paytables". Depending on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the player is paid this or that sum of money. Players will find a wide variation of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. Two identical keno paytables can hardly be found.
The house edge can vary from less than 4% to 66%.
Keno, a game similar to the big state or provincial lotteries, is easy to play and one of the most popular games in any casino. Keno appeared in China in 187 BC. Still the origins of the game are really a bit of a mystery. Several different versions exist.
The generally accepted theory is that the game was invented during some war in China when the army needed money badly. The head of state had no money support of his subjects. After some considerations he created the game of keno, which immediately got very popular and thus profitable for the state. The game was a success and it is cited as a major reason for the victory of Cheung's forces. It is also credited for providing resources and helping to fund the massive undertaking of building the Great Wall! Keno was later given a different name - the White Pigeon game. That was not for nothing: carrier pigeons informed the surrounding towns and villages of the winning numbers.
In the past rather than having a board of just numbers on the original keno boards, they used classic Chinese characters. Originally, as many as 120 characters were used in the game, and only after it left China would the number drop to a more familiar 80.
In the middle of the 19th keno was brought to the US. At the beginning keno was out of law. But it wasn't a real obstacle for the immigrants. It continued to use Chinese characters and thus obviously didn't enter popular mainstream American culture until it was modified to include the numerical system.
