Keno is a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game played at modern casinos. The parts of a keno game are a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" and 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball is imprinted with a number 1 through 80. The balls are mixed by a blower when it pushes air into the bubble. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system calculates all wagers based on the numbers drawn.
One can choose any numbers on a a blank keno ticket form and mark them with an "X". Then the wagers are placed and 20 balls are drawn.
The series of pay scale choices called "paytables" are set by each casino. Depending on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket the player is paid this or that sum of money. There is a wide range of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. One can hardly find two absolutely identical keno paytables.
Usually the house edge is from less than 4% to 66%.
In modern casinos "Keno runners" walk around calling "keno!" and offer to carry players' wagers to the keno booth for processing. The players give the keno runner the "inside ticket" and the wager payment. The "inside ticket" is a keno wager form filled out by the customer. The "inside ticket" represents a wager form that is to be filled out by the player. Then the wager and the ticket are taken to the keno counter. What he takes back is an "outside ticket". That is an official wager receipt. It is incumbent on the player to check the ticket for errors before the game balldraw is drawn. Any errors not corrected before the balldraw begins are not normally rectified.
When all the 20 numbers are known, the winning tickets are paid. The payouts differ in defferent casinos. For example, a four-spot ticket with wagered might return the if two numbers hit, bring if three numbers hit, and pay 0 if all four come in. But in another casino, the three-number hit might pay and all four 5, and in another the payoffs might be and 0. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average. Paybacks range from below 70 percent to more than 80 percent.
