A lot of modern casinos offer an opportunity to play keno - a lottery-like or bingo-like gambling game. A traditional live casino keno game uses a circular glass enclosure called a "bubble" containing 80 ping pong-like balls which determine the balldraw result. Each ball has a number (from 1 to 80) imprinted on it. The balls are mixed by a blower when it pushes air into the bubble. A lever opening a tube is pressed by a "caller" and then the balls lift one at a time into a "V" shaped tube called the "rabbit ears". The caller and a "verifier" are used to record each of 20 balls drawn, and the computerized keno system is used to calculate all wagers based on the numbers drawn.
Players mark an "X" over the "spot" choices on a blank keno ticket form containing numbers from 1 to 80. Then the wagers are placed and 20 balls are drawn.
"Paytables" are series of pay scale choices that are set by the casino. The players payout depends on how many numbers drawn match the numbers selected on the ticket. There is a wide range of keno paytables from casino to casino and a large deviation in the house edge set for each of those paytables. No two casinos' keno paytables are identical.
Usually the house edge is from less than 4% to 66%.
Straight ticket betting is betting the numbers marked as a single wager. Despite this way of playing is very simple many players prefer to bet more combinations.
A king ticket bet is made when a player chooses a number which is used in all combinations marked.
Combination ticket: The player marks several number groupings and plays combinations of them.
The player payout depends on how many numbers the player choses and how many numbers are "hit", multiplied by the proportion of the player's original wager to the “base rate” of the paytable. Typically, the more numbers a player chooses and the more numbers hit, the greater the payout, although some paytables pay for hitting a lesser number of spots.
The probability of a player hitting all 20 numbers on a 20 spot ticket is approximately 1 in 3.5 quintillion.
After the 20 numbers are drawn, winning tickets are paid according to a table that varies from house to house. If you have, for example, a four-spot ticket, you are paid 1:1 if 2 numbers hit, 1:5 if 3 numbers hit and 1:120! if all the 4 numbers hit. Some other casinos will offer partly or totally different payouts. Because of the variation, no payback percentage is common enough to be called average.
